Reconditioned axle shaft?

I was taking apart one of the rear French cast/built split axle I got off of the old French dumper I had.

It seems that either they modified the axle flange or that this is a way to reclaim/repair the axle flange when the bolt holes get out of round.

First pic is the conical insert:

Second photo is the hub stud with the insert on it to show how it fits:

And lastly here is the axle flange with the insert fit into it. The axle flange hole is significantly larger that standard to fit the insert and bolt.

The SNL does not show this part, nor do the later ORD-7s (Stock allowances) does not list this either.

So I'm on the fence as to what it is: A post war/NATO improvement or a way to repair worn axle shaft flanges. I have not gotten to any other axles off the dumper to see if they all had it, or just this one hub.

Checked both my other split axles and guess what, they are actually production parts.

mr farber i have several sets of split axles and they all have that split washer system.some from studes and some from cckws.

I confessed to my error. :oops: I never knew they were there.. I've taken split axles out previously and this is the first time they ever separated from the axle flange.

These little buggers are not mentioned in the SNL save for the listing I found as "Dowel". I'll have to go through my TM9-1801 to see if they are mentioned there... I don't think they are. TM10-1562 does list them, but not in any illustration. :?

My guess is that most people don't know they are there as they are so pressed into the axle flange that you never notice them.

Makes me wonder why only the split axles? I know the Banjo's are stronger because they are one piece cast steel... but they don't have the dowels.

I have never encountered a Studebaker rear axle that didn't have these dowels fitted. I've always known them as collets. I don't know whether Mr Timken used them in all their rear ends but the GMC/banjo axles would have been the better for having them. I've never seen them work loose unlike the Chev/GMC arrangement.
