Deep sump?

Postby pfarber » Sun Jun 01, 2008 6:55 am

Anyone else have the seep sump addition on their CCKW? My cargo truck has it, the dumper does not.

Was wondering if anyone had any info on why the deep sump was added.. factory mod? Certain organizations? I see it referenced in the TM, but not much info is there.

My CCKW, though it is a 42, has an engine from a '44, and it has the deep sump. I believe that it was a mid-war factory modification to prevent the oil from foaming on hills, when in the old shallow pan, the oil flowed to one end and was whipped up by the crank.

A great set of articles that every serious CCKW owner should read is "the Jimmy's Ancestry" By Bryce J. Sunderlin. Here is a link:

hope this helps!

I have read the articles. Lots of good stuff... but it also show us how little we know about CCKW production. I'm sure other vehicles have it worse off than we do.

The part now is to vette that information as best we can. Its a good start, but we need to keep growing the pool of knowledge.

Plus I have yet to nail down the one door latch vs two door latch thing on open cabs... my pet project.

Both of my trucks have the deep sump and it is the only pan referenced in the July 1943 TM 9-1802A Power Plant.

The deep sump pan was initially a production change that was to refit at first possible chance. It required a lot more than just the oil pan... new oil pump and frame bumpers were part of the change. Portrayal Press sells a book of GMC Technical Bulletins and the complete FMWSO is detailed.

The new motor was model number 3020 and was installed in CCKW 2205221 5/1/43

The TM9-1802A is basically a rehash of the TM10 maintenance manual, with some DUKW stuff.
