CCKW AC Oil Filter color

I have maintained from B&W photos that the CCKW Military Senior oil filters as supplied from GM on a NEW CCKW were white.

Others have countered that they were, in fact, GRAY.

Well, here is an interesting tidbit that *might* back up the 'filters are GRAY theory:

There is one problem. The Military Senior and Junior filters are explicitly NOT discussed:

"During the war, vehicles supplied to the military used the military standard senior and junior type filters. For obvious reasons I'm going to cover units for civilian passenger cars and trucks only here. "

So while there is some creedence to the filters are GRAY theory, its not conclusive.

I will reserve judgment till I find definitive proof....

It appears that the 'Military Senior' type oil filter was LATER called the AC S-2 filter. Although the S-2 filter part number was 1504439, SNL-G-508 calls the shell itself GM 1504316 (early) or 1595989 (late).

In the SNL, the entire oil filter assembly was GM-1504314 or the generic substitute (this would be the black one we are all familiar with) G085-3001900.

Could the Military Senior filter be so 'successful' that post war it became a regular GM part? Sure.. the entire GMC-270 engine was immediately put into commercial vehicles post war.

Still nothing conclusive... the decal on the Military Senior Filter is really difficult to find.

S-2 SERIES

THE 1946 CHEVROLET MASTER PARTS CATALOG SHOWS THE PART NUMBER FOR 1946 AS BEING 1504439. IT ALSO STATES THAT IT IS TO BE USED FOR 1942 MODELS. TECHNICALLY IT WOULD BE A RETROFIT, AND NOT BE PERIOD CORRECT FOR '42, SINCE IT DID NOT EXIST AT THAT TIME. HOWEVER, IT STARTED IT'S LIFE AS THE MILITARY STANDARD SENIOR FILTER USED DURING THE WAR USED ON MILITARY VEHICLES PRODUCED BY GM.

Now to find out what GRAY they used.

At no point was the oil filter ORANGE. The only orange filter I can think of may have been on G506s... but I am not even sure of that.

At no point was the oil filter a FRAM.

At no point was the GMC logo on the valve cover RED.

Doesn't say what color he painted the engine with, but it looks like plain OD.

I guess there is a reason most people don't open the hood for pictures.

Here is an NOS S-6 (the equivalent civvy version of the Military Junior filter)

This is the third one I've seen.. the decal is wrong for the military setup, but the color is pretty close what Plasticote is calling New Ford Gray.
