It's called experience, no pits, no noise, no side play in the races on ball bearings. One thing to realize is that transfers are noisy, some noise is determined by the condition of the bearings, it's up to you while the gear box is all apart to consider how new you want your truck to perform and sound.

Transfer case noise is 100% the straight cut gears meshing. If you can hear the bearings then things are in bad shape.. and bad bearings in no way shape or form sound like gears meshing. My M35a2 transfer case whine was louder than the unmuffeled diesel engine (and Bend me Overs incoherent babbeling... if you can imagine a noise that loud ).
