Valve guides.. FINALLY!

Finally got the valve guides all in.. not a hard job, but had to make a few things.

Fist, the exhaust valves on the 58 235 are at a 16deg angle off vertical...so that means making a wedge to align the hole with the press:

Then I needed to make a seating guide. This was 3/4ths inch black pipe on the lathe to cut off the threads (square) and then move up 7/8ths an inch to make another cut for the proper height of the exhaust valves:

The intake valves are set 15/16ths so that means a 1/2inch ID flat washer to make up the last 1/16th of an inch:

So here is the nitty gritty: An exhaust valve on the fixture, with the spacer in place to stop the ram when the proper valve guide height was set of 7/8ths of an inch:

And here's the intake valve with the washer set to 15/16th of an inch:

Last thing to do was ream the valve guides to .343 with a hand reamer (I got it online, about $40).

Tomorrow I wash the head, lap the valve seats and check the seal. If they are good enough I will install the valve train, if they are off the head will have to go to the shop to have the valve seats cut true to the valve guides.. not super expensive, but will take a few days to get done.

After reaming one valve is extremely tight... I think the press slightly belled in one side of the guide. The other 11 are great. Reamer worked fine in the cordless drill... not many people have 8 point sockets for square drives.... they used to be standard in all the Craftsman 'Master' tool kits...not you gotta buy them separate.

Holy crap I'm done with valves!

Here's a valve that I had lapped and is ready to be installed. Most are already in. Start with intake valves and do them all as they are easier to get the spring compressor on. A little assembly lube on the stem to keep things going till the rocker arm splashes some oil on the valve:

I have the head on its side to I can work left to right. Valve inserted (note that I already did the exhaust valve... should have started with the intake till I figured it all out:

Put the spring on with the grouped coils on the bottom near the head:

Add the retainer:

Compress the spring far enough to see the second grove on the valve stem. This is where the valve stem seal goes.

Slip the seal down the stem and into the second grove:

Add the two retainer clips so they fit in the top grove and slowly release the valve spring compressor so the retainer slides over the seal and catches the two clips:

Actually installing the head on the block is kinda a let down after the run around I had to do to get the valves installed.

Put your head gasket on the block. Take two 6 inch 1/2in-13 NC bolts and cut the heads off to use as a guide and hold the head gasket in place. Use a grinder cut off wheel to notch a slot in case you have to use a flat blade screwdriver to get them out.:

Using those same guides put the head on the block:

Install and torque the head bolts. Its starting to look like a motor!!
