Parts that don't exist?

Postby pfarber » Thu Jun 28, 2012 10:05 pm

Other than the obvious ones:

Gas tank
Spare tire carrier

What parts should I simply not even look for? It seems that every MV has this affliction where some parts just got thrown away or didn't last.

Is there a list of parts that I should either simply not look for, or if I DO see them, buy at any cost?

Hard to find, or expensive, or both include:

spare tire carrier (available as a repro, or I may know of a "project" one for you)
gas tank (not hard to find, just hard to find a good one. Once a truck has the bed removed, the tanks don't seem to last long)
rubber floor mat (I used to have several, but recently sold my last one, except the one I'm keeping)
deep sump oil pan
original 235 engine (seems like most have been swapped out)
decent bed (if you have the fabrication resources available, there are drawings available)
rear shock absorber kits (hard to find)
windshield frame (available as NOS or repro, but expensive)
wood steering wheel (duh!)
etc., etc.

Ive had a number of ebay searches set up for several years, and I just keep an eye on the results. I've found nearly all of my bearings and races this way, and rarely had to pay much for any of them. For instance, there is and original master cylinder listed right now... I almost bought it, until I checked my parts shelf, and realized I already had a NOS one.

Who has a repro spare tire carrier?

I have a project carrier, only needs the frame mounted plate bent and welded to the hinge. Easy peasy.

Vince Schneider (lkyfwd) from IN reproduced them. The side rails were not stamped like the originals, but they really turn out nicely. More details here:

Keep your eyes peeled also for:
engine splash pans (almost always missing, I have one)
firewall insulated pad (I've seen the NOS one for the CCKW, but I've never seen one for the G-506)

Hmm... I was getting flack about $500 when I was looking at doing them.

He did exactly what every fab shop I went to told me.... weld up sections, grind, repeat. The 'powers that be' said that the idea of anything by stamped rails would never fly. Good thing that no one else is listening to them either. I think the discussion is either on G503 or CCKW. org

In 2007-8 my price was $350 each unit.. sell for $500.

They look good enough. I don't know if he sold out, but he should post on other sites.. I'm surprised how many people don't know about G503.com, or consider it a jeep only site.

I have all the carriers I need... so good for him for doing it.

Now if we can only get the floor inspection covers repro'd. Then I'd be set.

Do you mean the one for the master cylinder? Originals are still around, if you look. I don't know what the pay back time would be for tooling like that...

There are three covers. Two are for the cab bolts to frame up by the toe boards (these are smaller ones, IIRC the Dodge ones will fit) and the other is the larger MC inspection cover,

VoV says they repro'd one... but I think its a very post war replacement due to not getting the tooling to stamp the original style. 'It came off a CCKW' was the answer I got when I questioned him (the old owner, from NY). The truck was a fresh Norwegian bring back and the owner was '100% sure it was original'. OK, sure.

I'd be happy if the profile was correct.

Add the outer read locking nut/seal to the parts that are a bitch to find.
