Fire Extinguishers

I'm looking for some bling to attract the ladies so I figure a fire extinguisher should be shiny enough to catch their eye.

Looking at the SNL is states on page 446:

G085-3001850 (CV-601119)(PYR-C21) EXTINGUISHER, fire, Pyrenne All (exe. NQ)

This is nice because I don't think the G508 SNL actually specifies a man/model number. So it *appears* that a Pyrenne model C-21 is a winner by the later SNL.

But the next line states:

(CV-476843) EXTINGUISHER, fire, one quart carbon tetrachloride (KX) All (exc. NQ)

Looking at page 7 to figure out who 'KX' is tells us it the:

Kent Extinguisher Company, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I've found some nice C-21s:

So.. is there a consensus on what should be in the cab of a G506?

Consensus?? Hope this doesn't turn into the tool list like on G503! Since both meet the size spec, and are specifically mentioned, it would appear that either is OK. It would be difficult for even a purist to claim that one was more correct than the other.

The annual AACA is having their winter meet in October in Hershey PA. From what I hear this is supposed to be an epic opportunity to get old car parts.

I can't find much about the Kent extinguishers.... and the Pyrenne model C-21 seems to be a somewhat uncommon one. Most are C-2 models.

I got a few hits from G503 but the signal to noise over there is way to high.

Since Pyrene has more company branches that the pine trees outside my house I figured that it would be interesting to see if we can nail down the C-21 extinguisher.

As I find more date info and Pyrene name permutations I'll post them here. Add in anything you find in a reply and I'll update this list

PYRENE Manufacturing: 1909 Original company established in Deleware. Quickly branched into fire extinguishers. Newark, NJ is typically listed as the manufacturers address.

C-O-TWO Fire Equipment Company: (C-O-TWO was the Trademark) Started in 1925 in CA, established a corporate affiliation with Pyrene and moved to Newark, in 1933.

PYRENE C-O-TWO Division: ASSUMED Wartime name of the two Corps. Almost 100% of C-O-TWO manufacturing was for the War until 1946.

PYRENE C-O-TWO Corporation: 1956 Merger of Pyrene Manufacturing and C-O-Two Fire Equipment Company

Baker Industries: May 1956, end of Pyrene.

The Trademark PYRENE expired in 1992. It was renewed in 1996/2000 for another company.

If anyone has a copy of the book "Prominent Families of New Jersey" there is a history of Pyrene that covers three pages. Starting at page 1125-1127. Google has page 1125 and 1127, need 1126!

Fyr-Fyter: Dayton, OH. 1916. Owners were originally Pyrene salesmen and then bought the mid-west sale territory. Still used today.

You will find 'Fyr-Fyter' with Pyrene logos:

These would be POST WAR evidently Pyrene scarfed up Fyr-Fighter, or at least made them use the logo in exchange for the two patents listed on the label. The first patent is 1944, the second 1951.

Here's a C21 that's post war, also:

That second patent number is from 1951. Thought it would be limited to the C-31, but this is a C-21 (model called for by Chevy TMs) but that second patent is the give away.

This is a new permutation of the Pyrene-C-O-TWO label (Pyrene - C-O-TWO DIVISION as opposed to Pyrene C-O-TWO Corporation) that patent will put the extinguisher between 1951 and 1956.

I'm glad the TM10 cleared up the extinguisher question:

This is obviously a Pyrene, note the circular ribs at the bottom	The second is a Kent (note the vertical ribs)

This is the last image from TM10-1127. Very clearly a Pyrene. None of the later manuals I have (and its a woefully incomplete list) lists KENT by part number. The ORD-7 (Supply allowance) is a little more believable... Basically it says:

1. Chevys are not delivered from the factory with an extinguisher.
2. The Engineering Corps is responsible for the sourcing, maintenance and supply of extinguishers.
3. The Engineering Corps don't care who made it.. just as long as it meets spec.

Not sure then why a SNL (G506, October 1943) would include the following:

You have to remember this very important fact about the SNLs:

Read the part after the WARNING (bold is mine)

Many of the parts listed herein are not stocked for issue. See ORD 7 and 8....

If you recall the ORD 7 title (for CCKWs, at least) is: ORGANIZATIONAL SPARE PARTS AND EQUIPMENT. THIS book tells you what is available via supply.

So Yes, there may be a specific part, with a specific part number, but that does not mean you can order it.

If you have an ORD7 for the G506 I'm confident that you will follow the same path, and reach the same conclusion.

Also, lots of things are added after the factory.... M2 decontaminators, MG mounts, fuel and shop bodies.

Looking over my TM10 parts lists for the CCKW I do not see the same warning. Since the Echelon system of maintenance started mid 42 if very well could have been possible to order specific parts. But I think that for simplicity at some level assembly's would be replaced rather than repairing specific parts.
