Curtains, not doors....

Postby pfarber » Sun Feb 10, 2013 8:18 am

I am very close to having the door frames redone for my CCKW.

So looking through the SNL I noted a couple of things regarding them.

First, canvas on an open cab is called a curtain, EXCEPT the top, which is called a deck. Must be a 40's thing.

Even after the change from original door, err, curtain window layout to the later one the part number did not change, nor was there a superseded part number. It just magically changed, as per the 44 SNL.

The windows were supplied by the Edward G. Budd Mfg. Co of MI. Interestingly, the Budd Co was initially of Delaware and Pennsylvania. Only in 1913 acquiring a Michigan factory from a bankrupt coach maker. The entire history is here: http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/b/budd/budd.htm

This part amazed me:

Although Budd expressed his displeasure at engaging in “war work”, it created a $19 million balance in their bank account, enabling the firm to relocate all of its railroad operations to a new plant in Bustleton, Pennsylvania, leaving Philadelphia’s Hunting Park exclusively for their automotive activities.

They hated providing war material... but they cashed the checks.
