Very interesting color photo

Look at this:

blackengine.jpg

Its hard to tell the exact type of CCKW this is but the registration number is W-4XXXXX

Note the firewall, and the small engine side panel. They are black. The paint near the grill looks to have peeled away. Also note the cad plated fasteners on the voltage regulator and radiator support rod. SHINY!

I have a beautiful pre WWII color photo of a negro mechanic working on early CCKW. It was taken at Ft Knox in 1941, the hood is open and the details of an early 1574 Cab and engine compartment jump out at you. The serial number of the cab is even visible on the firewall. The number is close to that on my 1574 cab.
I can even smell the grease on the mechanic's coveralls.
Wonderful hobby, the CCKW.

No, it was taken in 1942 (June 1st, to be exact).

Oh dear lord is nothing scared????? He makes is sound like he owns the original. I'm sure he does. Really, he does. Honest.

I think the paint is prob the same dark OD as used elsewhere on the truck - the darkening is just a trick of the light.

That discolouration near the grill may just be road dust.

Pity there wasn't a colour shot looking down into the engine compartment - there are several B & W pics from the same time looking down on engine bay that have been referenced in earlier post.

Those 2 colour pics are wonderful though and we are lucky to have them.

I don't think dust is the answer. If you look at the firewall its also completely black. And since you can see the shiny hardware on the radiator support and voltage regulator that would also rule out dust/dirt.

If you look at the cowl the horizontal part is OD, the firewall part is much darker. Also the frame tag is also the same dark color.

I think that, for whatever reason, at least one coat of paint was either very dark or they used a really weird primer. We are assuming that Red Oxide was the primer for all these trucks.... maybe not?

I imported the images into Corel draw and it does look like brown dust.

Magnified and put into 'negative' mode it a little clearer that the truck is naturally the darker color (that would be OK) and what looks like biege/tan/khaki is dirt/dust/mud. Best place to see it is around the vents on the side panel. Blow it up 200-400%

Man even color pictures are hard to figure out :(
