I was going to start posting a few things I found that showed how bad a person could be ripped off while looking for MV parts. For example, I found an auction on ebay for a SINGLE BULB that was $7.95. And someone BID ON IT. Now I ordered a box of 10 of the same bulbs for $11 delivered.
This was for an M35a2 (which could be argued is the 'next wave' of collectable MV's). I also just posted about an off the shelf block heater that was up to $75, when you could get it online for $30.
I quickly realized that it could turn into a full time job.
Whats the tip? SHOP AROUND. For the cost of buying 'retail' (aka from someone who claims to be a vendor) you can buy in bulk from online suppliers. Oil filters are another big way to save. Most MV filters are online (they are common WIX/NAPA part numbers) and can be had by the case for 50% off single purchase price. The savings will only INCREASE as inflation drives the price up automagically. I have a case of wix 51100 filters (jeep) from about 4 years ago (still have 4 left) that cost me less than $4 each. They are over $7 online and $12 at NAPA.
Some sellers are open to haggling, others are not. A good tip is to not start the negotiations by knocking the condition of the part. Start with general questions like 'is that your best price?' 'can you do any better?' or bundle 2 or more items and offer one price on the lot. Sometimes you can make a good deal a great one. I got a great deal on CCKW governor rebuild kits because the seller couldn't break a $50. I got 2 rebuild kits and a few data plates because I bundled the items to 'make up the change'. I did have correct change, but waving a $50 in front of someone can motivate them to deal.
Shop around and don't be afraid to negotiate. It will pay off.
