Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
I found this on the G:
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=164596
". I inspected the nut assy. more closely and did discover the axle nut and seal are two parts that can be separated and the seal portion replaced. I have quite a generous stash of the seal portion that is neoprene."
Anyone know what he's talking about? My nut is shot (one to many screwdriver blows to the castellated nut) so I have found NOS replacements. I bet they will be spendy.
But, for future reference.. anyone have any idea how to replaces the seal only portion????? Would be a good tip to share.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
I think I have it figured out. After some ebay searches it seems that this nut/seal setup is still very common in motorcycles.
The seal is just that... originaly they were leather, but you can find straight up neoprene seals to snap into the lock nut.
All the lock nuts/spiders on my rear axles are beat to hell (used a screwdriver rather than a hub nut remover) so I plan to replace them all.
But I'm going to measure the spindle and nut and see if I can't get a replacement seal only.
This is off a harley but I think the premiss is the same....
Evidently ebay was chock full of them 2-3 years ago.

It looks like Rex Ward in the UK may have the parts!
VoV didn't return emails... but also don't list the parts in the 'catalog'.
Most of the MV scene in the UK was occupied with War and Peace this week.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
Rex had new seals/nuts and lock nuts for both sides! SPENDY!!! $101.90 delivered.
I guess the secret is going to be finding out the proper replacement for the seal on the outer nut.

Same people are still bitching. Why anyone listens the head meatball Gopan/Dover is beyond me. I had to kick Gopan off this site for his ass-hattery.
Its a walk down memory lane.... glad I left them all behind.
The saddest fact is that the parts they need are READILY AVAILABLE from Rex Ward in the UK.
Unless VoV was holding out on me Dienst said he didn't have the outer banjo seal.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
The $101 from Rex was a full set of nuts, spiders and seals for both ends of the axle. Not just for 1 seal.
Got an email I was ripped off for $100 for one seal. It was two seals, two adjusting nuts, two spider washers and shipping. A little high but he had them and they were in my hands within a week.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
You must have bought Rex's last rear axle bearing seal/nuts. When I contacted him, he gave me a price of the seals, but is having nuts made in Poland. They are not available yet, and he doesn't yet know a price. Waiting to hear back from another vendor in France... no reply yet <<grrr>>
Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
The spindle nuts are common 2 1/8 -16 available lots of places. Kinda spendy though.
Dorman 615-138 Axle/Spindle Nut
Price: $49.18
You Save: $16.51 (25%)
Brand: Dorman
Model: 615-138
UPC: 019495617372
I could get a few dozen made here in the US... but without knowing what the seal part is you gotta pay the man.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
The Dorman nuts as pictured MIGHT work for the inner bearing nut (depends on thickness??), but not for the outer nut/seal assy, as there is no place to seat the seal.
Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
If the price of seals doesn't get sane, I will make my own. Other than having the right part for the right parts sake I think putting a baffle in the axle proper would be the best solution. Why they don't have differential to axle seals baffles me (no pun intended).

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
I am just guessing the reason, but have to imagine that it has to do with ease of replacement. To replacement differntial/axle seals, you'd have to drop the drive shaft, and at the very least pull the third member, which consequently requires removing BOTH axle shafts, rather than just the one that's leaking.
Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
If seals continue to cost $100+ each time they go bad then I will buba up the truck to fix it.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
I received two (2) nut/seal ass'y from Ross Prince. they were spendy, but he had them while no one else I contacted had any. They looked pretty dry and crusty when I unwrapped them, and the seals were hard as rock. My initial thought was to soak them in brake fluid to try and soften them up... Fortunately I noticed on closer examination that they are not rubber and or neoprene. They are leather, and even have spring "fingers" inside to help them maintain their shape. Nixed the brake fluid idea, and have them bathing in a tub of motor oil. That should soften em up!
IF you have the nut part, but a bad seal, the replacement for the seal portion ONLY is National 6090S, which is also available(same part number) from other mfg as well. The best deal I've found is Autozone, for a Timken 6090S. It's a special order part, but they offer free delivery to their store.

Re: Spindle nut with oil seal cryptic post....
Paid a little over $22 dollars per seal, delivered.
Advanced Auto Parts SUCKS. Charged me $6 to ship it to THEIR STORE! I though it was coming to my house.
The are a little different from the leather seals currently in the nuts.
Since I'll have a few extra nuts to repair I'll post photos as I replace the seals in the older nuts.
