Correct, the ground polarity was changed from positive to negative.
As far as the 'GM generator not fitting no GM trucks'.. the specific generator is not the issue. The issue is that the generators were increased in current capacity (from 25 to 40 amps) and the ground polarity was switched from positive to negative. There are plenty of vehicles that have type specific generators. But after late 42 the Army standardized on NEGATIVE ground for the CCKW, as part of an overall standardization process.
