SCORE! 1943 TM9-801

Gotta love e-bay.

$43 for a 43 TM9. Isn't that poetic? Although the 44 TM9 is all over the net.. I have yet to find the 43 version anywhere.

Lets hope its as good a read as the 44 version!

I have at least half a dozen. It is an interim manual and was issued with both Open and Closed Cab trucks,(new closed Cabs were still issued during 1944 and 1945)being most of the pics are for the open cab.
Again it will confuse some as it describes features that may not match late 43 and early 44 trucks. Note that the accompanying parts manual as noted on the dash panel,TM10-1562, is for closed cab. One has to have been there and experienced the trucks in order to understand this manual.
Hang on to it, if it has the covers intact and is not torn ir is worth big bucks.

Its in good condition.. and you really don't see the 43 TM.. probably as you said, the 44 would cover the vast majority of production trucks.

43 was a pivotal year for the Jimmy. New engine, new electrical, new cab, new cargo bed. There is no other year that has so many substantial changes to the CCKW than 1943. Its the year that MADE the CCKW what it is. A standardized wartime production truck.

Actually the Open Cab was a 1942 item, it was released for production 15 March 1943 before the transfer of responsibility to Ordnance, the engines were being constantly changed faster than they could change the manuals and the Wood Cargo Body was a late 1942 item. The April 43 TM-901, an Open Cab Manual was issued with new Closed Cabs that were still waiting on storage. The Closed Cab Data Plates will confirm this bit of information.

Trucks were constantly changing yes.. but most of the changes were from 43+. Ok, you win, some did start in the last quarter of 42, but production numbers to not justify adding a disclaimer to account for significantly less than 60k or so trucks (out of over 519,000 production) that had SOME of the changes in a very small portion of the production year. It will suffice to say that the vast majority of production changes affected 43-on trucks. The open cab appeared in August 42, and in limited number.

If you have specific 42 production numbers to back up a significant number of 1619 cabs please post it.. it would be interesting to figure that out.

This is funny... as it it contradicts everything I have in print:

From http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... nd/m35.htm

"Production of the GMC Truck, 2-1/2-ton, 6 x 6, Cargo, CCKW "Jimmy" or "Deuce and a half," began in 1941 by General Motors Corporation and ended in 1945, with 562,750 manufactured. This GMC truck was the most commonly used tactical vehicle in World War II. The GMCs were originally fitted with a sheet metal type cab. This was replaced after July 1943 by a tarpaulin or canvas cab, not only for the economic use of steel, but saving volume when transported by boat."

I don't know where they got 562k production number, nor what a 'canvas cab' cckw cab looks like. A rare airborne variant?

The GMC CCKW was not called a Duece and a Half. I generally stop reading when anyone makes that claim.

You will note that I revised the date od production for the Open Cab. That does not change the fact that the Open Cab TM9-801 1943 manual was issued with new 1943 Closed Cab CCKws. The early Open Cabs had the Data Plate referring to the Closed Cab TM10 Parts List.
